Onion’s Health Benefits

I’m having a hard time peeling Onions every time I prepare the ingredients to cook. “Yes, I cried”, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it. This is because Onions produce irritant chemical known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide that stimulates in the eyes’ lachrymal glands that release tears. Scientists used to blame the  allinase enzyme for the instability of substances in a cut onion.

Onion is part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs, Allium vegetables have been cultivated for centuries for not only their characteristic, pungent flavors but also for their medicinal properties. Allium vegetables have been studied extensively in relation to cancer, especially stomach and colorectal cancers. A prized member of the lily family, they lavish you with health benefits while adding oodles of taste to our food.

Onions are good source of vitamins C, B6, biotin, chromium, calcium, and dietary fibre. In addition to that, they contain good amounts of folic acid, vitamin B1 and vitamin K. Onions are consumed raw, cooked, dried as a powder or as juice. Onions originated in central Asia, and now in modern-day Iran and Pakistan. Never mind the tears they bring on; onions are an ace ally in your fight against a disease. Raw onion encourages the production of good cholesterol (HDL), thus keeping our heart healthy.
